Frequently asked questions
Can I calculate gold by tola or pennyweight?
Yes. Select tola or pennyweight (dwt), enter the weight and choose the fineness and currency. One tola is 11.6638038 grams; one pennyweight is one twentieth of a troy ounce, or 1.55517384 grams. The estimate is the value of the gold content, not a dealer offer.
How does the calculator work?
Weight is converted to grams and multiplied by the pure-gold share (fineness). The result is valued using an indicative gold price in the selected currency. For currencies other than USD, the converted gold price may use a separately cached quote and exchange rate.
How much will a scrap buyer pay for my gold?
Offers vary by buyer and are often below the estimated market value of the gold content. They may reflect assaying, refining, margins and other costs. Jewellery, coins and other items can also have value beyond their gold content; compare actual offers before deciding.
Can I calculate the value of scrap gold or jewellery?
For solid gold, enter the weight of the gold-bearing metal and its hallmark. Add each item separately if your pieces have different purities; the calculator sums their estimated gold content. Exclude gemstones and non-gold parts where possible. The calculation does not work for gold-plated items as though they were solid gold, and it is not a buyer's offer or an appraisal.
Is 14K exactly the same as 585 gold?
14 karats is 14 parts out of 24, approximately 58.33% gold. A 585 hallmark denotes 58.5%. This calculator uses 585 when you select 14K; check the hallmark on the item for its fineness.
Why is the price at a pawnshop or bank different?
The calculator shows the market value of the contained pure gold. Sellers add a premium, buy-back desks apply a discount, and taxes may apply. The gap versus the computed value is the cost of the specific deal.
Where does the data come from?
The gold price is indicative spot from Gold API; exchange rates come from Frankfurter. Page data is cached for an hour and can be older if an update fails. The FX rate date is not the time of the gold quote.
